Is Stripes Restaurant still open? Any comments on current service, food?
Stripes RestaurantThe restaurant changed hands last year, when the old owner retired.
The new management had my Rotary Club for their installation. I found the food to be quite good, though the service was slow.
Several of my friends have since gone there, and were a little disappointed.

Hi, all!
My sister and I are planning to take our parents, along with our spouses and kids (who will be 3 and 1 at the time) to Sea Pines sometime next year. My parents, in their early 60s, have been to the area a few times-- enough that we know that they love Sea Pines-- but apart from that, we don%26#39;t know where to start, as we are overwhelmed by the number of options. I think that, ideally, we%26#39;d be looking at a week-long trip, but apart from that, most everything (including the time of year that we%26#39;re going) is up in the air.
Any suggestions as to what we can expect to pay for a 4-bedroom house, what neighborhoods we might want to target, and/or what times of year to recommend for a quiet, laid-back vacation?

Coming to MB in a week--wondering what, if anything, is closed for the season (restaurants, shopping, mini golf, etc) and I figured the locals would know. Thanks in advance for any assistance!
There%26#39;s not ';a season'; any longer in MB. One season just runs into another. Hard Rock Park has cut back on the days/hours they%26#39;re open, the water parks usually back off after schools start, and some restaurants ease up a little on the live entertainment schedule, otherwise you won%26#39;t see much change, certainly in September. A few places close down in Jan/Feb, but that%26#39;s about it.

I think the water parks are closed now.
All the waterparks are now closed. There are a couple of hotels with indoor lazy river type setups but nothing like the parks.

if anyone is paying attention it would be obvious that I simply cannot make up my mind here... I am juggling 3 options at the moment for my stay in HH this summer. I have a nice condo at Evian in Shipyard that I think I will really like, I have a local broker checking into the Marriott properties for me - expecting a call later today, and now I have stumbled accross the Ocean Palm Villas... Argh... I need to stop looking and just book something already - but... Can anyone comment on the Ocean Palms Villas? I really like the idea of having use of the Westin resort. Drink by the pool, things for the kids, etc. HELP!!!

Ocean Palms is a nice facility, and it has the Westin amenities as well as a two or three bedroom condo.
It is a 10 week ownership resort, and many owners rent out some of their weeks. The Westin handles the rentals and put it%26#39;s overflow there.
The units have nice golf course views of the seventh and eighth holes of the Barony course. I think it is one of the best deals on HHI for a part time owner.

I%26#39;ve never been in one of the chat rooms, so I don%26#39;t know if this will reach you. In fact, I%26#39;ve already tried to send one response and I%26#39;m not sure that it went through, so I%26#39;m trying again. My husband and I own in Marriott%26#39;s Grande Ocean, the one on Forest Beach and absolutely love it. Unfortunately, as luck would have it, we cannot use our week this year because of a change in the start date of our son%26#39;s school. We haven%26#39;t decided whether to rent it or bank it for use another time, but if you might be interested, our unit is Oceanfront, the most desirable, and our reservations are for the week of August 19th through 26th.

We are planning a trip to Charleston over Christmas break. We would also like to spend a few days at an oceanfront resort. I am thinking the Myrtle Beach area because there is a lot of things to do if the weather doesn%26#39;t cooperate with beach walks. Any better beach areas closer to Charleston?
Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, Sullivans Island, Kiawah Island, and Seabrook Island are all closer to Charleston than Myrtle Beach. In December you will be able to get low rates on rental of cottages, condos, and cottages. There are also some hotels to choose from, if you prefer.
It is true that Myrtle Beach will offer more big hotels and more entertainments. The beach areas I have mentioned are residential/resort islands, without the without the large-scale development of MB. The weather should be fine for walks on the beach, but it will likely be too cool for swimming.
I guess it depends on what kind of things you want to do if the weather doesn%26#39;t cooperate. We have plantations (and they are totally decked out for the holidays!) and our local outdoor shopping mall even does free carriage rides at Christmastime through the center. (see: http://www.mountpleasanttownecentre.com/ ) The Hunley is a great visit, as is Patriot%26#39;s Point, the Christmas Lights Display on James Island, perhaps a day trip to Beaufort, a nice Aquarium, numerous museums of various types, cooking classes and demonstrations, historic/culinary/ghost tours, and endless choices of things to do in the city. Having said that, Isle of Palms will be a good choice for you - all of the things on the list are within 20-25 minutes. Just a thought!

Hi, dler! We%26#39;re from Bethany, IL - only an hour from you and are planning the same thing! We%26#39;re wanting to stay on the beach so the kids can play in the sand, go crabbing, etc. We%26#39;re still looking - have you found anything yet?
The Isle of Palms is very centrally located to downtown Charleston all lots of attractions in case of rain. Wild Dunes is a wonderful place - a resort community- and you can rent bikes, etc. Not sure of your budget but there are also places close by that suit most folks regardless of their budgets. Kiawah and Seabrook are very nice but are a little further out of Charleston.

I think we are going to stay in Charleston (Historic area, park it and walk) for a couple of days, and then driving to Hilton Head. It really isn%26#39;t in our price range (plus apparently it is really crowded) in summer, but off season looks great. Beach and nicer hotels. It is maybe two hours further drive south. Looks like about an hour then to Savannah, so we will see both cities. We central Illinoisians really crave sun and warmth in winter--and always the ocean. It is a different but not longer drive back.
Maybe see you there--the only people on the beach in winter!
Culturehound is correct...it really depends on what you are looking to do. Myrtle Beach doesnt really have a season anymore, as someone may have mentioned. It does slow down a good bit from November through February but nearly everything is still open. It%26#39;s definitely too cold to swim in December! Charleston is wonderful! I%26#39;m not sure I would want to leave it! Savannah is just as good or better!!! If you have any specific MB questions, just ask. I%26#39;m here everyday!
Just had to say that you people from Illinois won%26#39;t be the only ones enjoying the Carolina beaches at Christmas time!!! There will be plenty of Ohioians (we will be among those on Kiawah).
There%26#39;s plenty to do whether the weather cooperates or not. If it%26#39;s nice out (and generally we%26#39;re talking anything above 50 degrees) we%26#39;ll be biking and kayaking.
If it%26#39;s not so nice we just head into town, have some lunch out and figure if we want to wander around or visit a museum or whatever.
My family and I will be visiting Isle of Palms for the first time in a couple of weeks. We are bringing our two dogs and renting a dog friendly house. I know that the beach is dog friendly (with a leash), but we were wondering if there were any restaurants/bars on IOP that are dog friendly as well? We would love to be able to sit outside on a patio and have dinner somewhere without having to leave them at the beach house!!!

Pet friendlyI dont personally know the answer to your question. My guess is that the Windjammer or Banana Cabana might be ok with it...not positive though. If you still havent found out I would recommend posting this on the main Charleston Forum. There are 3 or 4 other local experts that actively respond to the Charleston Forum and we frequently get questions about Isle of Palms, North Charleston, et al. Perhaps one of the other participants will know...we just don%26#39;t venture off the main forum as often as we should.

We didn%26#39;t find any restaurants on Isle of Palms that allowed dogs, but we did go to Red%26#39;s Ice House which isn%26#39;t far from Isle of Palms (it%26#39;s on Shem Creek about 15 min away). They were very dog friendly, even brought water for them! Watching the dolphins from the table was awesome! Can%26#39;t beat the view!!!
If you are going to Charleston then Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. is also dog friendly. They also bring water out for the dogs and even gave them a dog cookies! Also, in downtown Charleston there is a dog bakery (Three Dog Bakery) that allows dogs in the shop and has a wide variety of dog treats!!!

I was thinking you probably did more research about where dogs were allowed. What about carriage tours if you carry the dog? Are dogs on a leash allowed on the grounds of Boone Hall, Drayton Hall and Middleton Place? Thanks any other info about what not to miss would be appreciated.
I believe that there are a few carriage ride companies that allow dogs. Palmetto Carriage Co (www.carriagetour.com) definitely allows dogs because I contacted them to make sure. We didn%26#39;t end up taking our dogs with us on the carriage ride though since they are bigger dogs and we didn%26#39;t know if they would want to stay on! Regardless of if you have your dog or not, I definitely recommend a carriage ride as a way to get a good overview of the city.
We only went to one plantation - Boone Hall and they do allow dogs. While they are not allowed in the actual house, they are allowed everywhere else. The grounds and slave quarters were interesting to explore and our dogs enjoyed walking around and seeing the horses! I know that Drayton Hall also allows dogs on their property, but I am not sure about Middleton Place.
I believe some of the walking tours/haunted ghost tours also allow dogs to come along if that is something that you would be interseted in.
On the morning that we took the carriage ride we took our dogs to My Three Dogs which is a doggie daycare in between Isle of Palms and Charleston. If you are wanting to do things that do not allow dogs, but don%26#39;t want to leave your dog at the hotel/beach house this might be a good option.
Also, in addition to Bubba Gumps and Red%26#39;s Ice House I had read that there were several other restaurants in the Isle of Palms/Charleston area that allow dogs, but we didn%26#39;t go to any of them so I can%26#39;t say for sure. From what I read most of them probably only allow dogs on the patio and some of them only allow dogs at one or two of their locations - so you should probably call and double check before going!

Has there been much storm damage in NMB? How about beach renourishment - has it restarted? Hope things are well?
Little damage if any and very little erosion in NMB. We fared very well, business as usual in NMB
