Anchorage Inn

I%26#39;ve read the reviews on this inn, now I%26#39;m looking for the ';expert'; to comment. I%26#39;m bringing a 70 yr old friend from England and want a decent, clean place to stay.

Anchorage Inn

The Anchorage Inn is a very nice and clean Inn, only 19 rooms so it is very small and quaint. The location can%26#39;t be beat and the amenities are comparable to many 4 Diamond hotels. They have a wine and cheese reception, a good complimentary continental breakfast, and sherry nightcaps. I think ya%26#39;ll would enjoy the Anchorage Inn.

Anchorage Inn

Thanks, I appreciate your answer. Now we%26#39;re just trying to decide on two rooms at the Anchorage or going for a VRBO two bedroom condo. Decisions, decisions!!!

My two cents...If I%26#39;m traveling with people I am really comfortable with and I want to spend LOTS of time with them, I always go for the 2-br condo if available. (nothing like having a glass of wine and some cheese in your own place and chatting into the late hours in a comfy, private living room).

That is something that we%26#39;re definitely considering. But, as always, price plays a part. We should make a final decision any day. I appreciate all the help!

Seabrook Island Trip Report

We just got back from a one week trip to Seabrook Island. We had a great time.

We stayed at Pelican Watch villas, booked through ResortQuest. Our unit (Gold level) was very nicely kept, clean, and comfortable. I’m very picky and I was quite pleased. ResortQuest was very responsive when we had a problem with our cable. I would like to note that although our unit was very clean, both at check-in and check-out we overheard people complaining about their units being dirty and very “buggy.”

The Pelican Watch villas are nicely located, on the Edisto River, very near the inlet to the ocean. The villas are in a perfect location for watching the sunset behind the island across the river. At high tide, there is literally no beach, and you can not walk to the main (North) beach. At low tide, the beach is wide and flat with hard packed sand. The water is calm, but as I had read previously, it is quite murky. A little above my ankles I couldn’t see my feet. It seemed a bit clearer on the North Beach side. I’m not comparing it to the Carribean or the Gulf, but to other Atlantic beaches I have been to, and it was much murkier.

The island is perfectly manicured and gorgeous. I was very nervous about the whole “gated community” or “country club-ish” feel, but it really wasn’t bad. We rode bikes on the street, but enjoyed biking on the beach much more. I think the main road is too narrow in many places to make biking enjoyable. I’d stick to the side streets and the beach. We rented the bikes from the place right on John’s Island since he is the only person who rents them for one day.

We saw lots of creatures such as deer, crabs, dolphins, fish, and one day there was an enormous alligator in the ocean in front of Pelican Watch. The local people told us this was not very common, to see an alligator in the ocean. He was only there for one day and people pretty much avoided the water for that day. We also found a good number of conch shells and sand dollars (throwing back anything living).

Freshfields is nice for conveniences. It certainly has a Disney-like feel to it. At times we felt like we were on a set for the Truman Show. But, I can’t imagine it not being there and having to go out to Maybank all the time. We shopped for a few things at Newton Fields, a Whole Foods type market with a Starbucks. For coffee, we went to Java Java every day. I’m a bit of a coffee snob, and I really enjoyed their coffee. You can also check your email there. The only thing that was offputting was that I saw the barista make my latte with a shot of coffee out of the thermos instead of a real shot of espresso. I don’t know if this is typical, or if she was being lazy. The only thing we ate at Freshfields was a sundae at Vincents.

For major shopping we went out to Maybank (25 mins from Pelican Watch) to the Piggly Wiggly since it is cheaper for some items than Newton Farms. Still, we were shocked at how much more expensive many groceries are there than in Boston. In the same strip mall as the Piggly Wiggly, you’ll find a CVS-type drugstore, video store, McDonalds, Dollar Store, liquor store, gas stations, and some restaurants (ie, Mexican, Chinese).

For nearby dining, we ate at Up Da Creek at Bohicket Marina. It is a casual restaurant with fresh fish. I had steamed local shrimp and the whole flounder with some typical southern-type sides and it was all very good. We also ate at the Fat Hen on Maybank, which was possibly my favorite meal of the week. It is a lively place with a great menu and drink list. The food was superb. Other restaurants we ate at were in Charleston.

Speaking of Charleston, don’t let anyone fool you into thinking it’s a 30-minute drive. Perhaps starting at the gate of Seabrook and arriving at the outskirts of Charleston, driving very fast and not at night. I’d count on at least 45 minutes, and it is NOT an easy drive at night. We still did it several times, but it was somewhat harrowing. The road is dark, winding, at times very foggy, quite narrow in some places, pretty fast (45-50mph?) and there is no divider for most of it. This was the only thing that we found to be a drag about staying at Seabrook. But, Charleston is the greatest city so it was worth it to trek in there.

Other things near Seabrook that we found to be very worthwhile visits are the tea plantation, the winery, and the Angel Oak. We also stopped in and browsed around Rosebank Farms and Stono Farm Market.

Overall, it is a very lovely place that I would recommend to others.

Seabrook Island Trip Report

What a lovely, detailed report!

I think the water is murky because of the incursion at the Edisto and Kiawah Rivers of pluff mud from the marsh, along with the tricky currents. It makes for wonderful habitat ... but not the most gorgeous water. At least, it is totally ';organic'; and naturally clean.

I cannot imagine who suggested to you that downtown Charleston is a 30-minute drive. Those folks must be the speeders I object to on the Bohicket Road and River Road!

There is a proposal before the Charleston County Council for a new, limited access parkway connecting James Island, near Charleston, to the out-lying areas of Johns Island, like Kiawah and Seabrook. If the new road is approved, it will make travel much safer.

I%26#39;m glad you had a good time. Please come back!

Seabrook Island Trip Report

Regarding the distance to Charleston...

Right from the Seabrook island website: ';Yet, despite its peaceful seclusion, Seabrook Island is conveniently located less than 30 minutes from all the charms of Charleston, the south%26#39;s most romantic city.';

From ResortQuest: ';Seabrook Island is a private, 2,200 acre island and club is located just 30 minutes south of historic Charleston on South Carolina%26#39;s beautiful Atlantic Coast.';

And so on. Most other Seabrook websites say this as well. I knew from tripadvisor that it would be closer to 45 minutes, but if you were just reading the publications, you would be in for a shock. It%26#39;s really a disservice to customers.

And yes, we%26#39;ll be back!

LOL! Since I%26#39;m on Kiawah, I don%26#39;t check the official Seabrook websites. They definitely need to change the message! :)

Great report! I think those driving times are from those who never leave the island (like me;-}) or perhaps it%26#39;s ';island time';.

To us, once you reach Maybank, you%26#39;re in the ';city';. My daughters and I have so many favorite little stops between SI and Charleston, I don%26#39;t know if we%26#39;ve ever made the drive non-stop.

Re: grocery costs--I suggest to my guests who are driving in to make a stop at the Sams (near the airport), Walmart (next to Sams and a new one in West Ashley), Costco, or the new Publix on Hwy 17. If you can get all your big stuff before you head to SI, the prices at Newton Farms are more tolerable.

Wouldn%26#39;t you know!? My husband just sent me a link to story on Piggly Wiggly.

The Big Pig (Piggly Wiggly on Maybank) is now offering online grocery shopping. This could be a huge time saver.

Vacation time saver-Grocery shopping online

Piggly Wiggly has just started offering online grocery shopping. For a $5.00 service charge, you can order your groceries in the comfort of your own home (before your vacation actually begins!). Orders can be placed up to a week in advance.

1. Visit thepig.net and go to the ';Click%26#39;n Shop'; link on the right.

2. Select your grocery items from the list.

3. Reserve a time to pick up the items.

4. Head to the Big Pig (Piggly Wiggly on Maybank Hwy)to pick up and pay for the groceries.

Just think about all the vacation time you can save!

*Note-I have been ordering online from Sam%26#39;s for the past couple of years. My groceries are waiting for me at customer service when I arrive in town. Sure beats walking around that huge warehouse looking for stuff.

  • Barony Grill still open??

Stan, is this restaurant still open at the Westin? I can%26#39;t get a straight answer from them, and it oddly doesn%26#39;t show up on the hotel website. Thanks !

    Barony Grill still open??

I hadn%26#39;t heard that the Barony Grill had closed, but it isn%26#39;t listed on the website nor anyplace else.

They may be doing a renovation, but at least now, the restaurant is closed.

Grocery store near Kiawah Island Golf Resort??

    Hello

I am wondering if there is a fully stocked grocery store near the resort? We may need to stock up on some babyfood and I am kind of picky as to what brand we use:)! (Earth%26#39;s Best or Gerber Organic) If not, I will attempt to bring my own but I am unsure as to what the current guidelines are the airport.

    Thanks

Grocery store near Kiawah Island Golf Resort??

I haven%26#39;t check on baby food, but Newton Farms, right outside the gates of Kiawah is a fully stocked grocery store.

    Newton Farms

    843.243.FARM

Further away, about a 20 minute drive, there is a big Piggly Wiggly at the intersection of Main Road and Maybank Highway.

    (843)559-5543

For organic foods, there is a really WONDERFUL grocery store called Earth Fare, on Folly Road, between Charleston and Kiawah. If you are driving from the airport, you might want to stop there on your way to the island.

    http://www.earthfare.com/

    (843) 769-4800

I suggest that you phone the stores to check on what brands they carry.

Grocery store near Kiawah Island Golf Resort??

Thank you very much for the info! You have really been a great help in the planning process of our trip:)! I will try to call the grocery stores tommorow. We can%26#39;t wait to visit Kiawah!!

    leighleigh,

Yesterday I posted on the SI boards about Piggly Wiggly%26#39;s new online shopping.

I just checked and the ';Big Pig';, located at Maybank Hwy. does carry the Gerber organic baby foods.

Here%26#39;s how Piggly Wiggly%26#39;s online shopping works.

    1. Click http://www.thepig.net/OnlineStores.asp to see the Pig stores that participate.

    2. Click the ';Shop Online Now'; button for Piggly Wiggly, 3575 Maybank Hwy, Johns Island, SC 29457

    (843)559-5542

    3. Do your shopping.

    4. Reserve a pickup time ( you can order up to a week in advance).

This service does cost $5.00 but would be well worth it to not have to schlep through the store with a baby in tow:-).

If you are coming down 17, there is a new Publix at the intersection of Bohicket Rd. (this is where you would turn left to go to Kiawah, make a quick right to Publix, instead).

If you need more than just babyfood there is both a Costco and Target at the end of 526 (Mark Clark Expressway) at 17 near the Citadel Mall. Friends loved the Target (to pick up all the things they realized they%26#39;d forgotten, after spending one night on the road with their little one). These stores are about 25 miles away, so make sure you stop on your way to the island.

    Have fun!

    October hotel ';deals';?

Looking for the best pool areas (possibly indoors) for my 7 and 9 year old kids. Trip in two weeks! We%26#39;ve stayed at the Dunes Village and the kids loved the lazy river, but there%26#39;s not indoor pool, just the river. Indoor ';waterpark'; was for toddler-age...

    TIA,

    KC

    October hotel ';deals';?

I%26#39;ve checked a bit and it seems most hotels have amazingly low rates in October! I%26#39;m clueless as to which has the best pool complex - heated outdoor, or indoor.

    I%26#39;m grateful for any guidance!

    KC

    October hotel ';deals';?

Whenever the topic of indoor pools comes up, I always recommend Compass Cove. Since they have several buildings, they have several indoor pools, rivers, etc. I recommend the Pinnacle building, but they%26#39;re all respectable.

Follow this link, it%26#39;ll download a map of the Compass Cove Resort in CFM format. CFM is just like PDF and can be viewed with most PDF readers, such as Adobe Acrobat or Foxit Reader.

    http://tinyurl.com/3f3ld2

You%26#39;ll see the entire complex complete with 2 sizeable indoor pools. Have a great trip.

The Carribean has a special and all rooms are $89 per night through October

Is the Carribean really nice? I%26#39;m not familiar with it.

    Thanks,

    KC

The Monterey is having a special for Oct. Five nights for under $300. They have an indoor pool and a free breakfast.

I haven%26#39;t stayed at the Carribean but I have a friend who has. They liked it. I do know that they built a new building with the last year or two and renovated the building that was there. I think that all of there rooms and 1-4 bedrooom condos but they are all 89 a night through this month.

    http://www.caribbeanresort.com/

    I don%26#39;t see this special on the Carribeans website anymore. I think the you had to book by Sept 30. They do still have some discounts for this month though.%26#39;

Coral Beach which is one of my favorite places to stay also have some good specials for this month.

The Breakers also has really inexpensive rates - but many of the larger rooms are listed as ';8 blocks north';, and it seems to use the amenities we%26#39;d have to go to the main building.

Can anyone compare pool complexes - Breakers, Coral Beach, Long Bay, Dunes Village... it%26#39;s so confusing!

    KC

The Caribbean is one of my favorites when we are staying in a hotel. The last time I stayed was right before the remodeling took place a so I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s even better now.

Crown Reef Resort has on bedroom oceanfront suites for $59/night. We are going Oct 8th-12th.

Hotel help - Andrew Pinckney Inn, Doubletree or ???

Can anyone offer any advice on what hotel to stay in for my wife and I...we will be making our first trip to Charleston in mid-November and debated whether to stay downtown or out at the beach. We are now leaning towards downtown and looking at the Andrew Pinckney Inn or Doubletree among others...as well as taking suggestions - can anyone offer any help?

    Thanks in advance....

Hotel help - Andrew Pinckney Inn, Doubletree or ???

I%26#39;d recommend the Holiday Inn Charleston (Historic District). We%26#39;ve stayed there twice along in a few others and we love it. I mean it was close to everything and they have there own parking lot versus some are either across the street or in parking decks...

Hotel help - Andrew Pinckney Inn, Doubletree or ???

Indeed the Holiday Inn - Mills House (there are a few H.I.%26#39;s in town) is a great pick. www.millshouse.com

The others you mentioned are also nice but there is something ';special'; about the Mills House.

    Enjoy!

To get the true charm and feel of Charleston, you should stay downtown. That is what you come to Charleston to experience. In November, the water will be too cool to do anything other than take a nice walk along the beach so maybe do that for one afternoon.

I agree with the Mills House. You would never know it was a HI. Even the food is good! Great location. It is just across from 82 Queen. You and your wife will enjoy dinner in the courtyard at 82 Queen and maybe sip on something special or have lunch (the chicken salad is served in a pineapple half) at Mills House out by the fountain.

JTMays usually knows all the ins and outs about the hotels downtown. Maybe he will chime in.

Thanks for the props SCBlossum. The 2 hotels that you mentioned are very close in proximity, one block apart, but very different types of hotels. The Andrew Pinckney Inn is a very small boutique hotel, around 40 rooms or so. The DoubleTree is a national chain and has around 200 rooms. My personal preference is to stay in smaller hotels that can offer a more personalized experience. The location and uniqueness of the Andrew Pinckney should make it an excellent choice for you.

Thank you for all of the feedback...we are looking forward to visiting in a few weeks.

I just returned from Charleston for our first visit two weeks ago. I admit choosing a hotel was one of the hardest pre-planning steps. I picked 3 alternatives from the reviews here and let my husband choose between them. He did a great job! We stayed at the Ansonborough Inn and just loved it. The rooms were very large and nicely decorated. They had the most wonderful paintings throughout the hotel. This is a small inn that offers continental breakfast and a wine and cheese social in the evening. They do not have a restaurant in the building. With all of the restaurants to choose from I did not miss having a restaurant. It is two to three blocks from the main market area but the exercise was always welcomed after eating a delicious meal.

The other hotel that we were considering was the Anchorage Inn. It is closer to the shops and restaurants and from the outside looked like a nice place to stay. It also has very good reviews.

After our first trip we kenw that we would be coming back on a regular basis. Charleston is beautiful!

    Visiting This Weekend

Saturday the local Kiwanis Club is sponsoring the annual Chili Cookoff at Honey Horn.

    From their website

We will be hard pressed to surpass the record turnout of vendors and attendees that we had in 2007 but you can be assured of a great time for a great cause again this year.

    We will again have two categories of events, one that follows the rules of CASI(Chili Appreciation Society International) along with our local competion which adheres to the policy, ';Anything Goes;';

There are two types of judging for the local competition. First, the general public is allowed to vote for the best chili in both professional and amateur categories. A group of honorable judges determine the best chili.

For the CASI competition, judges use a determined set of criteria to decide the best chili. The judging. is so blind that not until the judging is complete, do we know who has the best chili.

Honey Horn is a great location for our events and is located on the North end of the island where the Cross Island Parkway meets William Hilton Parkway. Click here for a map of how to find Honey Horn.

One ticket allows you to eat as much chili as you like. Beverages are extra. Anti-acids are provided by Burkes Pharmacy. Advanced tickets are $10.00 and available through any Kiwanis member, Burke%26#39;s Pharmacy, The Coastal Discovery Museum,

The Internet Cafe in Coligny Plaza or any location of NBSC or Wachovia bank. Tickets are also available at the door for $12.00.

Musical entertainment has been provided by ';Low Country Boil'; and ';Southwind'; in the past and an announcement will be made when we get closer to the event.have provided the musical entertainment.

We also thank our corporate sponsors for their generosity. Click here to see our Corporate Sponsors

If anybody is in Myrtle Beach now could you please tell me what the water temperature is like? Is it really cold? Also, are they any webcams that I can go to and see the beach? I am thinking about coming to MB for a week on Oct. 18th. But, I have two little kids ages 6 and 7 who LOVE the water. I didn%26#39;t know if it would be too cold for them.

Thanks for any info you can give me.

    Are You In MB Now?

    I%26#39;m not in MB, but...

The average ocean temperature for MB in October is in the low 70%26#39;s. Compare that to an average temp in the low 80%26#39;s in the summer. A little brisk, if you ask me. Run a tub of 73 degree water and see if your kids like it.

As for webcams, it doesn%26#39;t get any better than this:

    mail.seasideproperties.com/avwebcam2.shtml

You can control it yourself, focus in on the beach and zoom in. You won%26#39;t see many people swimming.

    Are You In MB Now?

here are two other very good webcams:

    http://www.beachcove.com/webcam.cfm

    www.grandeshores.com/grandeshoreswebcam.cfm

How does the water temp. compare to the first week of April? Is it that cold or warmer?

Water would be even colder in April. What ';warmth'; there is now is from the warm summer months that heated the water.

April ocean temps will still be cold from the winter months. Late May to early June for good swimming temps.

Most pools are heated and many resorts have indoor pools. Kids would still have chance to get wet.

    I AM!!!!

I can tell you . . . I%26#39;ve been here in both April and October and the water is MUCH warmer this time of year.

Two years ago we were here in April and it was so cold that we had to go out and buy sweatshirts.

We were here last April and the weather was beautiful in the afternoons but the mornings and evenings were pretty cool.

This is the first time I%26#39;ve ever come down here in October and by 10am its warm enough to get out and enjoy the beach. Just remember though that the water temps aren%26#39;t as warm as during the summer months but if you just dive right in you quickly become aclimated.

    ENJOY!!!

Mid October water temps will be fine...especially for 6 and 7 year olds from the midwest. Our kids (similar age) go in the water in March and November (when it%26#39;s much cooler). Just be certain to bring towels, sweatshirts for the kids for when they get OUT of the water.

Sports bar in Hilton head island

Agree with the recommendation for Wild Wing Cafe. They are very accommodating and will make sure that you can see your game from where you are seated. We have encountered long waits for tables so plan accordingly. The wings are great and they will also marinate boneless breast of chicken in any of the wing flavors. There are lots of spicy choices that have real flavor, not just fire. For mild tastes, lemon pepper is a great choice.

    third day needed?

Hi - thanks to suggestions on this forum, we have planned a loose itinerary for our (currently) 1-1/2 day trip to charleston.

We should arrive in the late afternoon on Monday, staying at shem Creek Inn (thanks, Culturehound!) Is the market only on Saturday? Will there be time to take in the Market after 4PM or will the vendors be gone? Can we then walk to Waterfront Park?

Dinner in shem Creek - Vickerys or Shem Creek Bar and Grill, do you think?

Tuesday - Morning harbor cruise and carriage ride combo (reservations required?)

afternoon - Market and walk around historic district

Dinner at 82 queen or hanks.

OR…we could do the Market first and then the Combo harbor cruise and carriage ride?

We don’t plan a visit to a Plantation, so are there any “don’t miss” if we do a third day?

Since our visit time is so brief, it really helps to have the opinions of this forum. Thanks so much.

    third day needed?

The famous Charleston City Market in the historic district is open EVERY day. The vendors will close at 4 pm. The Farmer%26#39;s Market, in Marion Square, is open only on Saturdays.

If you stay for an extra day you could tour a museum home, take an evening ghost tour, visit the SC Aquarium, take the boat trip to Fort Sumter National Park for the fort tour, see the Hunley Submarine (since you%26#39;re here on a weekend when the preservation facility is open), go to Patriot%26#39;s Point (near Shem Creek) ... the list goes on and on.

Out of curiosity ... why have you decided not to visit a plantation? One of the plantations would have been very high on my ';must do'; list.

    third day needed?

PS - Your dinner selections are excellent. If you stay an extra night you might want to eat at both Hanks and 82 Queen. Otherwise, you can have lunch at 82 Queen, and dinner at Hanks, which is not open for lunch. With all of the walking, you can use the calories!

One of the must do (even before the Market) would be to go to at least one of the house museums downtown-either Edmonston-Alston House or Nathaniel-Russell House, especially if you are not going to one of the plantations.

A third day will not be wasted! There is so much to see and so much to do here.

The art galleries are usually open until 6.

I agree that 82 Queen (courtyard if weather is ok) and Hanks are both good choices for dinner.

It is fun to walk through Waterfront Park any time of the day. I like to take a cup of coffee and go there in the morning.

The Market is open from 10-4.

If you%26#39;re planning to stay in town for dinner, late afternoon head over to the rooftop bar at the Market Pavillion. Great view of the harbor and the bridge.

I agree with SCBlossom about Waterfront. So do many others, it appears!

    Charleston/Savannah Planned Trip Help

We want to either fly in to Charleston or Savannah and then rent a car and drive to the other city. We would then return to Houston from the city that we drove to. Is this feasible? Which city first? Also, we thought we%26#39;d stop by Tybee Island and take a look around on the drive. We also want to go to Paula Deen%26#39;s restaurant and was thinking either the Paula Deen tour or the Foodie tour (or both?). Any thoughts from all you great forum readers out there? Ya%26#39;ll have been a great help to me numerous times!! Thanks TripAdvisor for wonderful forums and other great resources for us travelers.

    Charleston/Savannah Planned Trip Help

Sometimes you can get direct flights and good prices between Houston and Charleston. I do not know about the flights from Savannah. I wish we had access to Southwest Airlines.

I prefer Charleston to Savannah (big rivalry - like Dallas %26amp; Houston) but people in Savannah might disagree. They do have Paula but we have some great food up here, too.

    Charleston/Savannah Planned Trip Help

    A couple of thoughts...

Tybee isn%26#39;t on the way from Savannah to Charleston. It%26#39;s not as convenient as the Charleston-area beaches, which have a good reputation for beauty and accessibility. I%26#39;d suggest visiting Savannah for the sites and stopping in perhaps Beaufort and then go on to Charleston and the beaches (or do the trip in reverse; whichever works better for your airfare).

Paula Deen certainly has made a name for herself and you should definitely read the reviews for her restaurant and tour. In Savannah, I would recommend you go to Mrs. Wilkes Boarding house for lunch - it%26#39;s an institution. In Charleston - I%26#39;d recommend any number of restaurants, but if it%26#39;s uniqueness you%26#39;re looking for, spend an evening at Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant and do visit a plantation or two.

I am doing the same trip in a few weeks with my mom, Savannah then Charleston. I have been to Savannha, but not Charleston. Really looking forward to Charleston. So I need to start researching ladies stuff to do in Charleston. We are staying at King George IV Inn.

Try having High Tea at Charleston Place Hotel, shopping on King Street, a carriage ride, touring a house museum downtown, touring Middleton Place (good place for lunch and great house tour!), sip on drinks at the rooftop bar at the Market Pavillion Inn...so much to do!

Dock Street Theater is under repair but Footlight Players may have something while you are in town. Check to see if the Preservation Society or Symphony Society is offering house tours.

There is so much to do and see!

Wear COMFORTABLE flats that can walk and walk. This is a walking town. Tuck in a small flashlight because the sidewalks and cobblestone streets can be tricky!

Definitely take in a class at Charleston Cooks on East Bay St..

Thanks so much. Sounds like all I need ;) This was the least amount of time I have needed to spend planning a trip. We arrive after the home tours. Next time hopefully.

Waterfront Park in Top 10 Public Spaces

On a side note - locals - did we not have the most awesome sunset tonight? The pink and lavendar clouds with the lightning bursting through them were northwest of the actual sunset. Though we had cats-and-dogs-type rain for a good 70 minutes, (we needed it), it did give a great light show over the ocean.

Waterfront Park in Top 10 Public Spaces

Out of Kiawan we had the awesome sunset (I took lots of photos that may apprear on TA); but we missed the rain. Strangest climate here ... wait 5 minutes ... move 5 miles ... the weather is completely different.

Great honor! We always make sure we take guests, who are in town with us, down to the Waterfront Park.

Italian Restaurant and, Place to Dance?

I love Charleston and have the privilege of visiting several times a year. I%26#39;m going to pass on Il Corteil this time, disappointed with awful service last 2 visits. We do love italian, I recall Fulton Five being pretty good.....anything else?

Also, where do the 35+ go to dance without all the hip hop crowd?

    Thx.

Italian Restaurant and, Place to Dance?

There is a new Italian place just over the Ashley, on Harbor View Road, called Lombardi%26#39;s. I haven%26#39;t been there yet, but all the NY people out on Kiawah are raving about it. The owner//chef is a transplant from Brooklyn, so say ';hello';.

    Lombardi%26#39;s Italian Restaurant

979 Harbor View Road, Charleston, SC 29412

    (843) 795-3133

Italian Restaurant and, Place to Dance?

I%26#39;ve heard mixed things about Capriccio%26#39;s in Mt. Pleasant; not far from there is Bacco%26#39;s which I really enjoyed (and that reminds me that Bacci%26#39;s in the historic district is pretty good too).

I have read very good reviews of Al di La, which is in West Ashley. I haven%26#39;t made it there yet, but it%26#39;s on my list of places to try, because I%26#39;ve read so many rave reviews.

Al Di La is very good. The owner-chef lived in Tuscany and returned with great recipes. There is plenty of parking in the parking lot behind the restaurant and there is a walk-thru to the front entry. Reservations are required in advance because it fills up quick!

I have heard some good things about Lombardi%26#39;s, too but have not tried it.

Another hidden away place that is great and has been around for years is Mondos Delight on Folly Road. Very small place in a strip center between Walgreens and Sonic near Camp Road.

Amuse is a tapas restaurant on Sam Rittenberg near the library, but it also has Italian offerings. The owner-chef is from a good Italian family. He used to be a chef at Charleston Place and at Al Di La. Sometimes he makes his tiramisu...YUMMMM!!!

I ate at Al-Di-La about 2 weeks ago and it was verry good. I had the gnocchi with shrimp and it was quite tasty. Our server, Damon, was very good and knowledgeable.

I%26#39;ve eaten at Mondo%26#39;s befre and it was quite good, too.

The one Italian place that I haven%26#39;t tried yet is Pane e Vino, a restaurant that seems to get more than it%26#39;s share of negativity on this board. I%26#39;ve only heard good things about it from local folks, and can%26#39;t wait to try it.

  • Chez Fish--closed!

I%26#39;d heard a rumor that Chez Fish had closed its doors. It was just confirmed by one of my neighbors.

While I hadn%26#39;t eaten there recently, lossing Chez Fish just takes away another choice.

    Another restaurant closes

Chez Fish has closed! There had been talk recently that this restaurant might be the next to close. Now it%26#39;s been confirmed by one of my Seabrook Island neighbors.

I suspect this won%26#39;t be the last restaurant in the area to close its doors.

    Another restaurant closes

We noticed the lack of activity when we were down there last week. We were told there were new owners that came in back in March, then don%26#39;t know what happened.

I will miss their salad w/fried goat cheese, yum!

    Another restaurant closes

Do either of you know the situation with Bohicket Bistro? Some comforting pasta would be nice right now, but whenever I stop by they are closed.

    kiawahvilla,

This does not sound good for the bistro. The rumors I%26#39;m hearing are the banks are just showing up at restaurants and closing the doors (that line of credit thing!).

The restaurant biz is a tough one during good times. With the economic situation now, it%26#39;s anyone%26#39;s guess which restaurant will close next.

Most of the ';full timers'; living on Kiawah and Seabrook are retired with fixed incomes. My friends have already started ';pinching pennies';.

For those of us who get to visit only occasionally, it is vital to support the local businesses. Guess I%26#39;ll have to eat out more...tough job but I%26#39;ll do my patriotic duty;-)

Pinching pennies is the ';new black';.

IMO - The only restaurant that could succeed right now would be a ';mom and pop'; diner with cheap, predictable comfort food.

Oh, well .. I%26#39;m off to Newton Farms for for a can of Campbell%26#39;s soup! Keep the faith, everyone.

    Local Suggestions on Itinerary

My friend and I have never been to South Carolina and are flying into Charleston for 4 nights and 5 days... We would like to see/experience/enjoy as much of the area as possible... Possible ideas...

-Day trip to Savannah with 1-2 night stay in either Savannah or Hilton Head (currently have 1 night booked at Crowne Plaza HH).

-2 or 3 Nights in Charleston? (currently have 3 nights booked at Mills House Charleston). Planning to do carriage tour, ghost tour, and tours to local plantations

-Day Trip to Myrtle Beach to see area and the Brookgreen Gardens?

We will be leaving two weeks from today so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

    Local Suggestions on Itinerary

First of all, a big southern welcome to Charleston! You will, no doubt, have a memorable stay and understand why we love it here so much.

Secondly - good on you for getting the Mills House! It%26#39;s a highly-recommended hotel for staying in Charleston%26#39;s historic district.

Brookgreen Gardens is lovely, but you don%26#39;t have to travel far to experience beautiful gardens. I%26#39;d suggest since you%26#39;re coming just prior to the end of the Charleston Candlelight Garden tours run by the Preservation Society that you stay in the city, save gas, and take the walking tour of about 10 gardens. see www.preservationsociety.org Bring good footwear, a light jacket and a flashlight if you go on the evening tour.

    Enjoy the planning!

    Honeymoon in Pawleys

Hello, we will be honeymooning late October, early November in Pawleys Island. We%26#39;ve already got our accomodations, but am not sure what things there are to do. (Especially romantic things) So would appreciate any advice. I want to at least plan one really nice dinner, so what are the best posh restaurants with the best food from Georgetown up through Myrtle?

Have also considered a horse drawn carriage (maybe even to take us to dinner) Also, I know she would enjoy horseback riding, even though I%26#39;ve never done it. We both like wine tasting and tours. Any and all ideas appreciated!

    Honeymoon in Pawleys

Frank%26#39;s ( http://www.franksandoutback.com/ ) is probably the favorite ';romantic'; spot in Pawleys. For something extra special and a little off the beaten path, you might check with the Carriage House at Litchfield Plantation - http://www.litchfieldplantation.com/ It%26#39;s a private dining club open to plantation guests, but they have been known to make exceptions, particularly in the offseason. For either, make reservations early.

Carriage and horseback riding is tough. The Pawleys Island area is pretty much a laid back beach town. There may be some horseback riding available up around MB, but I%26#39;m not aware of it. The carriage ride will probably require a day trip to Charleston.

    Honeymoon in Pawleys

Thanks for the info. The horseback thing was just one hair-brained idea. Any ideas for things to do anywhere in the area, MB, Murell%26#39;s Inlet, Pawleys etc. We may take a day trip to Charleston too. Also have read about taking a ferry to Bulls Is., so any feedback on that is appreciated also.

The Bull Island ferry trip is fun if you can hit good weather. It%26#39;s a pleasant ferry ride thru the backwaters and a fun hike to the beach on Bull Island. Mosquitos can be annoying, but should be okay with your timing. A day trip to historic district in Charleston is also worth the time if you can work it in. Some other quick thoughts -

Kayak trip with Black River Outfitters, Georgetown. They offer great tours and your timing is perfect. http://www.blackriveroutdoors.com/

Bar hop along the marsh walk in Murrells Inlet. Activity will have slowed down by then, but most places will still have live bands on the weekend.

Cruise Winyah Bay and visit Shell Island (North Island) with Cap%26#39;n Rod. http://www.lowcountrytours.com/

Enjoy a leisurely day at Brookgreen Gardens. Beautiful sculpture gardens with other attractions.

    http://www.brookgreen.org/

Pick up a ';Fresh Yankee Served Daily'; t-shirt and a beer at Big Tuna in Georgetown. Front Street in Georgetown is also a neat place to stroll around, and they have some excellent restaurants. Our favorites are River Room and Goat Island Grill. Rice Paddy is also very nice, just a little more formal and fancy.

Another really good restaurant in a beautiful setting is Austin%26#39;s at Litchfield Inn. (Overlooks the beach from 2nd floor of Inn). Very nice for a romantic dinner. (Austin%26#39;s has 2 other locations - downstairs at Litchfield Inn - very casual - and on Highway 17 at Pawleys. The one upstairs at the Inn is definitely the nicest.

Anyone know of any specials for a nice oceanfront hotel for around nov 9th Thanks in advance

    Nov hotel specials

I%26#39;d think that nearly all of them are offering rock bottom pricing at that time?

    Golf course that allows rider

My wife and I are headed to HHI later this month... I%26#39;m hoping to play some golf--the wife doesn;t play, but is content to drive the cart and laugh at my ';ability!'; Any suggestions on a course that would allow a rider without paying another greens fee?

    Golf course that allows rider

Almost all courses will allow a rider, however, they must pay for the cart.

    Golf course that allows rider

I rode along with DH on the Ocean Course in Sea Pines (not much ocean, despite the name). And he reconnends that I might like to ride along next time he plays the Robert Trent Jones course in Palmetto Dunes-very pretty course.

    HIlton Head for Thanksgiving

We go to Hilton Head every summer. This Aug. we rented a private home in Sea Pines on Oystercatcher. We%26#39;d love to go back for the holiday -problem is I can%26#39;t go for 7 days, only 5 and I see the place that I normally rent from charges you for a 7 day stay regardless. Does anyone know of another rental agency that only charges for 5 nights or per day? I know the Disney property does (but I want to be oceanfront).I%26#39;d prefer a private home because we could heat the pool -most condos will have their pools closed in November. Thanks for any suggestions.

    HIlton Head for Thanksgiving

I would advise calling the major companies. Thanksgiving might be hard because of demand to get a good 5 day rate. If you check VRBO you might be able to find them too.

By the way, in general, it%26#39;s customary to charge a nightly rate, when offered, which is 1/5 the weekly rate. So that%26#39;s what you%26#39;re seeing.

But, given the demand might be down, I%26#39;m guessing you can find a place that might give you a deal.

Also, I don%26#39;t know about condos not having a heated pool then, I own a Huntington Villa in Palmetto Dunes and the pool is definitely open and heated in November.

    HIlton Head for Thanksgiving

Islebeback is correct about pool heating. Captains Walk is heated, and I believe most condo pools still are heated.

The major sgencies and many private rentals do part week rentals. check www. Homeaway.com or VRBO.com for private rentals.

Most HH agencies are now showing rentals on Hiltonheadrentals.com

    Stan (hhiguy)

We spend every Thanksgiving at HHI (we stay at the Disney resort, which I understand you don%26#39;t want). I just wanted to mention that lots of places have premade Thanksgiving dinners you can buy. Two are Piggly Wiggly and Signe%26#39;s, however I%26#39;m sure there are others.

    Best beach?

We are thinking about booking a big beach house in either South Carolina or Georgia for a family get-together. Our daughter will be the only child (9 months old) so kids%26#39; activities are not a priority. Looking for nice swimmable beaches, good restaurants, stuff to do (no one is really into golf), and decent access to a major airport (at least within 3 hours by car). Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

    Best beach?

If it were just the two of you coming with your baby I would recommend Kiawah as absolutely the best beach for babies ... and the reason we started coming here years ago. Ten miles of clean, firm packed sand, shallow slope, light surf, warm water, and no crowds make Kiawah tops for crawling, learning to walk, and getting aquainted with the water.

Activities on Kiawah do include golf (of course!), as well as tennis, bicycling, kayaking or canoeing, and enjoying nature. There are properties of all sizes available for rent. Instead of one, big beach house, you might consider renting several smaller places all in the same area.

On the down side for some groups, Kiawah has fewer restaurants and other night time activities than some other locations. On Kiawah, evening entertainments are pretty simple. Lots of owners and guests prefer to enjoy some wine on the beach, followed by a simple dinner on the screened porch. When we feel like an evening out, we usually head into Charleston.

    Best beach?

Our favorite is Garden City or Surfside. They run into one another. Very family oriented. Mild surf lots to do in the area for kids of all ages. I don%26#39;t think you can get away from golf no matter where you go in MB. This end of MB has many of restaurants near by and MB International Air Port is a 15 min drive just off 17 bypass. ( a very easy drive) Where ever you stay I%26#39;m sure you will have a wonderful time. Keep us all posted!

I agree w/Villa, Kiawah is the place, been going there for almost 25 yrs.

We take our bikes and kayaks (if you don%26#39;t have your own, you can easily rent). I can give you the names of several resources for kayak trips for small groups. Bikes are the best way to get around the island and to see all there is to see. You can rent those little baby things (I don%26#39;t know what they are called, long ago!!!) that pull behind your bike, too.

We like to do lunches out, then back to Kiawah for ';wine time'; on the beach before a leisurely dinner, no dressing up this way either!

If we do dine out, we too mostly head for Charleston, but we will usually do it at the end of a day already spent in the city, unless we are specifically meeting friends.

If you have those who just have to shop, there are some neat little places at Freshfields (along w/a grocery store) just off the island.

We%26#39;ve had plenty of guests to Kiawah over the years and no one has ever been bored (in fact they always say the time goes by too fast).

    Tattoos

Is it REALLY illegal to get a tattoo in South Carolina?????

    Tattoos

It is not illegal, but it is regulated, which means operators must be licensed and subject to health inspections. It can also be controlled at the local level thru zoning restrictions. State law limits the minimum age of customers. I believe it%26#39;s 21 or 18 with signed parental consent, but I%26#39;m not certain. MB has several tattoo parlors.

    Always be wary of a ';permanent reminder of a temporary feeling....';

    plantation/home tours

We%26#39;d like to do just one or two tours. Maybe one plantation and one historical home. There are a lot to choose from-any suggestions for most worthwhile? Maybe one plantation, and one home. Thanks

    plantation/home tours

Most pick Middleton, if you only have time for one, beautiful grounds, barns %26amp; shops (ironworking and the like) and the house itself.

Drayton Hall is good if you want to see the bare bones (it%26#39;s not fixed up or decorated), it%26#39;s pretty interesting. There%26#39;s also the ';7-seater';, which is pretty novel in itself.

    Have fun!

    plantation/home tours

Thanks, I%26#39;ve read a lot of good things about Middleton. Probably should clarify that I%26#39;m asking about historical homes in Charleston (aside from the plantations).

I%26#39;m not well versed on the homes, only been to a few of them, I%26#39;m sure there are several of the regulars who will chime in with the info you need.

    Beth

When will you be here? If you come before Oct 26 you can participate in the Preservation Society tours and get a big selection of beautiful homes for one price each day.

    www.preservationsociety.org

Otherwise - I%26#39;d see the grounds (free) of the Calhoun Mansion, and visit the Nathaniel Russell House (though there are many that are worthwhile!)

Welcome to Charleston and enjoy your visit!

Over the past few years, we%26#39;ve toured just about every major plantation/historic home in the Charleston area. I think which homes you pick depends partly on where your interests lie. Some people only want to see beautifully restored homes and are not as concerned with historical accuracy/authenticity, while others are more interested in historically preserved homes. My personal favorite plantation is Drayton Hall, because the tour is absolutely fascinating and I love the fact that the house looks pretty much exactly like it did when it was built in 1748. However, Middleton Place has gorgeous grounds and is also interesting to tour.

Downtown, my favorite preserved house is the Aiken-Rhett House, which is actually an urban plantation. It has a self-guided audio tour, so you can go at your own pace, and you can wander the old slave quarters and the grounds. Some of my other favorites are the Nathaniel Russell House, which has a gorgeous cantilevered staircase, the Heyward Washington House, which has an amazing cabinet by Thomas Elfe, and the Edmonston Alston House, whose tour is very interesting, because a great deal of the house%26#39;s history is known.

    Hope this helps a little!

I%26#39;ve been to Charleston many times and toured all the historical homes several times. The absolute best historical home in Charleston is Calhoun Mansion. Tours are $15 (purchase tickets at the house) and it is well worth it. This home is privately owned with the owner living there, but there are thousands of antiques from all over the world and different eras here and the colonial period architecture is awsome. If you are only touring one home, this would be the one! It is located on Meeting Street on the right just as you come up from Battery Park.

I have been to Boone Hall (and really enjoyed it) and Middleton Place. If you are only seeing one, I%26#39;d recommend Middleton Place. You can easily spend an entire day there if you like. Definately have lunch there - they have the best fried chicken I have ever had!

    Have a great time!

You might want to check inthe Heritage Passport at the Visitor%26#39;s Center. It gives you a discount on tickets to several things. It is a really good deal!

Thanks for all the great tips..we%26#39;ll be there 1st week of November, so We%26#39;ll miss the Preservation Society tours, but looking forward to seeing some of these historical places.

That%26#39;s OK - still plenty to do...

If you%26#39;re into fall festivals, this one features horseback riding... http://www.ccprc.com/index.asp?nid=138

And what could be more fun than the Holiday Fun Run and Walk http://www.ccprc.com/index.asp?NID=1060 I think I might do that one myself!!! Great way to get into the holiday spirit!

(besides all the usual Charleston things, that is!)

    Enjoy and welcome!

My friend I I are headed to Charleston for a long weekend. We are interested in touring homes, ghost tour, plantation tours, etc. Is there a place where we can order multiple tours for a discounted price? Also what are some musts?!?! Thanks so much!

    Package Tours

You can get discounts for tours, etc., from the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau -

    www.charlestoncvb.com/visitors/contacts.html

I am not sure what sorts of packages are available, but the Charleston CVB can help you coordinate a tour schedule.

If you have time, you can order free information to be mailed to you in advance of your trip.

    Package Tours

If you visit before Oct 26, we have just the thing for you! The Preservation Society opens about 8-10 homes (or gardens) each night, and for one price, you can visit all of them. Each one is attended by 5-6 docents who have been given info on the room they%26#39;re in charge of.

    www.preservationsociety.org

    Welcome to Charleston and enjoy!

For the ';Musts'; = check out the ';Things To Do'; (left margin) and select the one that addresses 1,2,and 3 day itineraries.

Everyone has different taste, but don%26#39;t leave here without taking a carriage tour and select from the list (some people love history others not; some love architecture or gardening, so see what suits you - we have it all!)

    Welcome to Charleston - Enjoy!

The Visitors Center has the Heritage Passport which has several tickets which are deeply discounted. They are for some of the very popular things to do here. The official Vistor%26#39;s Center is very nice and is in the old train station.

Fiddler's Cove Beach and Racquet Club

We are thinking of booking a condo there in March. (Fiddlers Cove Beach and Racquet Club #6) We will have our 2 granddaughter ( ages 5 and 8) visiting during March Break.

Any comments (pro and con) on this particular place and activities for the girls.

Fiddler's Cove Beach and Racquet Club

    GrammieH

I don%26#39;t recommend FC- it is very old and really not in the best area of HH. I think you will be happier in a Plantation or North /South Forest Beach area where you and the kids can walk around and go to shops and restaurants and ice cream parlors. There is more to do in that area. If the girls can ride bikes you could rent - although at that age they may not be good enough to navigate the area.

There are more postings about Marriott properties on this forum than about any other topic.

You should use the search function on the top of the forum to seek out what many others have said about the Marriott properties on the island. Just tyoe in Marriott and you%26#39;ll get pages and pages of posting.

Go to the overview pages and see the listings of viewers favorite restaurants.

    thank you for your help.

Weather is difficult to predict in October. For the past week we have had glorious beach weather on Kiawah, which is north of Hilton Head. Bring a light jacket or sweater in case the evenings are cool, but be prepared with sunscreen for during the day!

thank you for the info. Looking forward to the trip

  • Help, just booked a 4night vacation to Myrtle Beach

I just book the Bay View Resort for 4 night 10/9 to 10/13. We are traveling by car from NY.

Last minute trip as we both need time to get away from our jobs. Just 2 adults.

Any tips on what not to miss?

I think we will go to the Hsrd Rock Park if it%26#39;s still open. Will it be warm enough to swim?

    Any tips much appreciated.

    Thanks

Hard Rock Park has filed for chapter 11 and is closed until at least next spring.

Unless you are very hearty and part polar bear I wouldn%26#39;t plan on a dip in the ocean in October.

There are many good shows but I%26#39;m not sure what is still playing in October. Medeival Times, Dixie Stampede, Carolina Opry, Le Grande Cirque just to name a few. Plenty of shopping at Broadway At The Beach, Barefoot Landing and other locations.

Here are some of the dining spots that we enjoy:

    Lee%26#39;s Inlet Kitchen- Murrell%26#39;s Inlet

    Sara J%26#39;s- Surfside Beach

    Little Pig%26#39;s BBQ- Myrtle Beach

Ville Mare (fresh Italian)- Myrtle Beach

    Sea Captains House- Myrtle Beach

Help, just booked a 4night vacation to Myrtle Beach

I would love to go in Oct. just to be able to do some of the things we don%26#39;t usually get to do because I love to spend all day on the beach. I would suggest some of the shows, dixie stampede and they Legends show are they only 2 i have been to. I would recommend legends over those 2. Just enjoy some of the great restaurants and shopping especially at Bradway, it will be perfect weather for strolling through the outside mall. Our favorite places to eat are Tony Roma%26#39;s (ribs) and Key West grill (seafood etc.). The hard rock cafe is o.k. if you%26#39;ve never been it%26#39;s an experience, usually in the busy times you can%26#39;t get in there and definatley try out Jimmy Buffet%26#39;s margaritaville.

Thanks for the ideas and links.

I have read here that HRP had closed. I guess we will just stroll on the beach instead of swimming.

What should we pack? Shorts, tank tops for the days and jeans and maybe a sweater for nights?

I hope the weather is calm when we%26#39;re there.

    ';Unless you are very hearty and part polar bear I wouldn%26#39;t plan on a dip in the ocean in October.';

I would certainly take exception with that......average water temps in October are low 70%26#39;s. Granted...most of who you see in the water in October are Northerners, but we find it to be very comfortable.

Actually.....we think late Sept and October is one of the best times to be in Myrtle. Warm, dry days and cool, pleasant evenings. Lot%26#39;s of hiking to do and not having to worry about bugs...humidity. No crowds!!...what else could you ask for??

I think your choice for clothing is just fine. Good chance you could get some real warm afternoons....you%26#39;ll need those shorts on the beach!

Have fun!......(3 more weeks for us!)

    Gerry %26amp; Pat

    Thanks.

We leave tomorrow after work. 13 1/2 hour drive.

We leave on Sunday 4 am. I can not wait. We have been in Oct. and have swam in the ocean. I checked the weather and the weather is going to be near 80. Sunday can not come soon enough.

Air temps near 80 %26amp; water temps in the 70%26#39;s...

taking a dip in those ';fridgid conditions'; qualifies for membership in the polar bear club?

I guess I%26#39;m a lifetime member then. Absolutely pack those bathing suits!

The weather has been excellent for October. I think you will be able to handle the water temps. I just looked at Crown Reef%26#39;s webcam and people are in the water and lying on the beach.

We just got back last week and if the air temps have not dropped too much DIVE IN!!! The water temps were in the 80%26#39;s the last 3 weeks in Sept in Garden City. Can%26#39;t wait for May! Sharon.

Anyone know how Divine Fish House in murrells Inlet is?

Place to stay on the beach

Can anyone tell me if there are any hotel/motel on the beach? If so can you recomend any?

Place to stay on the beach

There are Four direct on the beach.

    The Westin in Port royal

    The Marriott in Palmetto dunes

    The Hilton in Palmetto Dunes

The Holiday Inn at South Forest Beach

The Crown Plaza while not directly on the beach is right by the beach entrance in Shipyard.

With the exception of the Holiday Inn, all these hotels are 4 star establishments.

Many have posted that you can get excellent rates by using Hotwire. All these hotels are listed there with the exception of the Marriott.

    Any hotels with Jacuzzi rooms?

I%26#39;m going to Myrtle Beach at the end of the month. I%26#39;m trying to find a room in Myrtle Beach that has a jacuzzi in the room as we are going for a romantic getaway. Any ideas?

    Any hotels with Jacuzzi rooms?

I know that Crown Reef has them

    Any hotels with Jacuzzi rooms?

sea glass tower has jacuzzis and lovely views with the walls being windows in the living room area. tho i will say last time i was there, it was a little dated. but it%26#39;s changed hands since then.

I was just at Sea Glass in August, they have Jacuzzi tubs, not the large 2 person in room Jacuzzi%26#39;s. If that is the type you are referring to I have never seen them in Myrtle Beach, maybe they are there somewhere though.

Dunes village had jacuzzi tubs n the bathroom

Royale Palms has jacuzzi tubs as well.

Breakers Resort has a nice Jacuzzi room. its a two person Jacuzzi. Nice!

Crown Reef has them BUT the one we had last week was worthless. It is a little larger than a regular tub and only 3 of the 5 jets worked. Not large enough for 2 adults. They do have decent heated jacuzzis in pool area and this time of year few people in them in the evening.

Horizon on 77th street has j. tubs

  • Holiday Inn Historic District

Earlier this month I travelled to Charleston to visit my daughter who attends the College of Charleston. This was my third trip to the city, the first one was many years ago, the second in August of this year. I stayed in three differnt hotels each visit, the last one at the Holiday Inn in the Historic District, which I chose for its proximity to my daughter%26#39;s campus. It ended up being a great choice. The hotel is very convenient to virtually everything and nicely laid out with all the amenities I expected. My room was clean and neat and handsomely decorated. Except for breakfast, I did not eat there, but that is to be expected when you begin to understand the amount and quality of very good to great restaurants that are in a city of Charleston%26#39;s size. Guiding me through all my choices for dining and sightseeing was the superb concierge at the Holiday Inn, Kevin McQuade. This transplanted Connecticut native konws Charleston intimately and is enthusastic about sharing that knowledge with his guests. I will return to the Holiday Inn for all of the reasons I have mentioned, but especially because of Kevin McQuade.

    Holiday Inn Historic District

The Mills House is highly recommended by folks on this board for a reason. It is elegant, historic, in a great location, and is a great value (many visitors have reported that they%26#39;ve gotten $105-$135 rates for off-nights and you cannot beat that with a stick!)

Good to know a concierge%26#39;s name - I hope he reads this - good news like that is always welcome.

For anyone looking for a hotel, just remember it is listed under ';Holiday Inn Historic District'; but in no way, shape or form is it like any other H.I. you know.

Thanks cofcdad for your overview! Glad you had a good time. Also glad you weren%26#39;t here from Thurs to yesterday as we made up for the lack of rain for the past several years (it seemed like it!) in just 4 days. Not to worry now = weather is perfect!

    Holiday Inn Historic District

Very interesting but I hope he also posted it under the hotel section? If I%26#39;m looking for hotels I go to the hotel section not the forum!!

Just for clarification - ';The Holiday Inn Historic District';, on Calhoun Street, and ';The Mills House'; (also owned by Holiday Inn), on Meeting Street, are two different hotels. Both are highly regarded on TA.

Yes Kiawahvilla is right - both are in the HD but one has that in its name and the Mills House uses the Mills House in its name. Both have outstanding reputations and people are happy staying at either place. My personal preference - (in case this wasn%26#39;t glaringly obvious!) is the Mills House.

    Thanks KV!

Is the Holiday Inn historic in a good location to tour Charleston? I had read a post that it was best to stay around Market St. and on the map the Holiday Inn seemed to be outside of this area. We are looking at possibly staying here but remain undecided due to its location - any thoughts?

    Thanks.

The OP liked the location because it is near The College of Charleston. If you are coming for a short visit, and want to walk out your door into the heart of the historic district, stay further south on the peninsula.

It is very close - only a few blocks to Market Street. Advantage - if you%26#39;re staying on the weekend, you%26#39;ll have a front row seat to one of the country%26#39;s best Farmers Markets. (way more than veggies!)

Can you recommend somewhere budget friendly in the historic district? Easy walking access..

I could be wrong, but you won%26#39;t be able to do much better than $100 in the Historic District, even in the low season on a low-priced day. Is that what you mean by ';budget';?

How's the gas situation on HHI?

I%26#39;m hoping someone who%26#39;s been on HHI over the weekend or else a resident can tell me how the gas situation is on HHI. I was planning a vacation there leaving in about a week but I wanted to suss out whether there will potentially be problems with gas shortages in HHI since we are having them at home. It%26#39;s not so much the price of the gas (although that in itself is enough to make me rethink my trip) but the availability of gas. I just don%26#39;t want to get stuck in HHI or worse in the middle of nowhere on the way home. Thanks in advance.

How's the gas situation on HHI?

We left there Sat. morning and there was one station that was completly out of gas. Lowest price I saw was 3.91 and the highest was 4.29, but I can almost bet the price is higher by now, we saw prices between 4.99 and 5.09 in Columbia.

How's the gas situation on HHI?

    Check out this story from the local paper ';The Island Packet';

    islandpacket.com/news/local/story/610787.html

    Stan (hhiguy)

hi i am heading to HHI next weekend (oct 3) and called ahead to the marriott. apparently gas is high, but definately available.

i filled up on Friday. Paid $3.57 for regular. I have been hearing that there are problems on the interstates in North Carolina.

    Stan (hhiguy)

Shhhhh...we do not have a gas shortage in the Charleston area. In fact, prices are pretty good.

Use this site for details in your area...www.gasbuddy.com

I drove onto the island from Atlanta on Thursday and was pleasantly surprised to find gas in South Carolina as low as $3.40 in many places.

Regular on the island is $3.41 today.

Last nights TV news mentioned that even Charlotte has a reasonable supply of Gas in all grades.

    Stan (hhiguy)

Enjoy those prices! It is over $4 in some places around my town and there are still shortages. I am about 1 hour north of Atlanta.

I paid $2.92 a galleon today at the Sunoco Station at Northridge Plaza.

    Stan (hhiguy)

Anyone driving down this way through Georgetown - the 3 gas stations just south of G-town (SC) are all at 2.59/gal today!

    Shorewood vs. Seacrest

I was planning to rent a unit at Seacrest for a week, but came across a unit at the Shorewood that still looks renovated and is about $600 less for the week. We will be traveling with our one year old. Nice accomodations are important to me. Is Seacrest worth the price difference?

    Shorewood vs. Seacrest

SeaCrest is much newer, and has some amenities that Shorewood doesn%26#39;t.

Shorewood is about 26 years old, SeaCrest was built in 1999. SeaCrest has a TikiBar on premises, a hot tub, fitness center, and two pools. The size of each apartment is somewhat larger than shorewood.

you can also be assured that you get an ocean view, that may not be the case at Shorewood.

Having said that, both are among the best in the Forest Beach area.

    Stan (hhiguy)

    Shorewood vs. Seacrest

I am in the same boat. many Shorewood units do look recently renovated while nicer Seacrest units go for more. What did you decide??

I have stayed at Shorewood and our unit was very nice. The Shorewood complex is great- I definitely think it is worth saving the $600 for the week. Call the owner or rental agent at Shorewood and talk to them. We had an ocean view 3 bedroom unit and it was gorgeous. There were 6 of us and we had plenty of room. When you talk to them- ask when it was renovated. $600 is quite a bit of money and I don%26#39;t think Seacrest is worth that much more $$.

We ended up going w/ the Seacrest - mostly b/c this is our first big vacation w/ our daughter who will be one. Since we%26#39;ll be spending more time in the condo that families w/ older children might (for naps, etc.), we wanted to be sure we%26#39;d get a nice unit.

I am sure you will love it! The location is great! Walk around the area and look at the other places for future reference!

    Clevehts:

How was your trip? We would like to do a 2.5 week trip with our 1 year old in MArch.

Would you recommend the Sea Crest? how was location and proximity to beach and pool and park?

Any advice you could give would be much appreciated.

Loukie: Since this original post was six months ago, I would email Cleve personally. Just click on the name clevehts and you can send a message which will go into their personal email which they probably look at more frequently than this old post. Just a suggestion.

You will love the Forest Beach area of the island. A group of 14 (3 families) stayed at Egret Point in Shipyard Plantation for the March Break. We are planning on going again this March Break with 16 of us so far. The SeaCrest is on the ocean with no roads between the hotel and the ocean. It%26#39;s across the road from Coligny Plaza which is great to walk to. Rent bikes and rent a tag-a-long for your wee one. Everyone bikes, everywhere on the island. You can even see dolphins as you ride along the beach. Gorgeous.

Hope this helps, Your Fellow Ontarian!

    D in Muskoka.

We have stayed in Seacrest a number of times. Last summer we stayed elsewhere (not Shorewood) to save money. Next summer we are going back to Seacrest. OK I%26#39;m spoiled.

Even at Seacrest you need to check if the unit your interested in has been renovated. We have stayed in one unit that needed it. After that experience we switched rental companies and have been very happy with their renovated Seacrest units.

Need close access to a fishing pier & a covered lazy river

My husband and I are planning a trip to Myrtle Beach and we have 2 very different needs. I just want to lounge in a covered lazy river while my husband needs close access to a fishing pier (so he can fish while I have the car out shopping!). Any suggestions?

Need close access to a fishing pier %26amp; a covered lazy river

Crown Reef is close (walking distance) to Springmaid Pier and I think their lazy river goes from inside to outside so part of it is covered...Springmaid Resort is right at the pier but it didn%26#39;t look that great to me but I think they have two lazy rivers, one indoor and one outdoor that maybe heated.

There are several hotels/condos close to 2nd ave pier and pier 14 but I can%26#39;t think of any with covered lazy rivers. There probably are some though.

Prince resort at cherrygrove pier but it looks like the lazy river is outdoors not covered.

Need close access to a fishing pier %26amp; a covered lazy river

The Camelot By The Sea has an indoor lazy river. It is located at 2000 N. Ocean Blvd and there is a pier 6 blocks away.

The Sandy Beach Resort has an enclosed lazy river and pool and it is only 1 block away from the 2nd Ave Pier in MB. Check out the condo rooms in the new Palmetto building.

Crown Reef lazy river is about 1/2 covered and is a good size. Prince Resort has a small, uncovered lazy river.

How close is The Dunes from Apache pier? Dunes has a great indoor water park with a lazy river.
