Four 60ish women traveling by car to Charleston 1-5 Sep. Staying at The Lodge Alley Inn; any advice as to activities, casual restaurants, beaches ... appreciated. Where NOT to go also would help.

There are plenty of great restaurants all around the the Lodge Alley Inn. You are within two blocks of Slightly North of Broad (SNOB), Magnolias, Carolinas, High Cotton, Blossom, and Charleston Chop House. My personal favorite is SNOB. Avoid Hymann鈥檚.
Take a carriage tour of the city or several. There are 4 or 5 routes determined randomly (controlled by the city not the tour company) at the start of the tour. Use the tour company that has mules instead of horses.
I agree with golfer, and I%26#39;ll add...consider ';happy hour'; at Social; consider a cooking class at Charleston Cooks (very close); harbor cruise; a trip to a plantation; nearby beach at Isle of Palms for walking on the beach; shopping on King Street.
Basically most everything ';below'; the Visitor%26#39;s Center and ';to the right'; of King Street is the visitor area.
Bring walking shoes, an umbrella, sunscreen and comfortable clothing and ENJOY!
I agree with Culture - and I would also suggest a nighttime ghost tour - the Original Charleston Walks or Bulldog Tours are the best! Not only is it fun, but you learn alot of interesting facts about Charleston. I would also recommend the Old South Carriage Company for your carriage ride - we have used them twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times - we got a different route both times, also! And in addition to shopping on King Street, leave a few hours one afternoon for shopping at the Market!
Oh yes, since you do have a car, I would definitely recommend a short trip out to John%26#39;s Island to see the Angel Oak!
Take a walk through Waterfront Park and along the Battery to White Pointe Gardens. This was one of the highlights of my recent trip to Charleston.
Have heard about a flea market or farmer%26#39;s market in the Charleston area??? Also, a bakery or early morning cafe to walk to from The Lodge Alley Inn to pick up rolls or donuts. I am a VERY early riser and the other three are not, so would like to get out. Are there any buffet restaurants with good food where you could get a sampling of different SC foods? Thanks so much. Looking forward to next week.
Ok, stupid question but why use the carriage tour with the mules as apposed to the horses? Just curious!
As far as the mules vs horses.... I always heard that the mules take the heat better. Not exactly sure...
