Are there any Graveyard Tours in Charleston or only
Ghost Tours?
Just wanted confirmation if you have to visit graveyards on your own.
Thank you.
Graveyard Tours
During the daytime, you are welcome to stroll throught the churchyards and read the inscriptions. Doing so is extremely moving. You may even find yourself lost in thought and losing track of time! At night, most are locked.
A couple of the ghost tours ';peak'; into cemetaries, and you might be able to find a private guide who would take you through and point out interesting monuments. However, I know of no tours of the cemetaries themselves.
The historic area of Charleston does not have the large, park-like, public graveyards that you find in some other cities. Charleston%26#39;s churchyards and private burial grounds are small and contained. The little foot-paths don%26#39;t lend themselves to tour groups. The burial plots are close together, so there is no gathering space for a group.
Beyond the size, there is the issue of respect for the dead. Charleston%26#39;s departed citizens are not forgotten. Many people buried in the historic cemetaries have family members still living in the area and attending the churches.
