Traveling with 2 Small Dogs

My husband and myself and our small dog and my Mom and her small dog would like to take a long weekend for a family beach getaway in the next month-we live in Atlanta and would drive down. We just need some R%26amp;R!

We would like to rent a condo or home on the beach.

What area of hilton head should I be looking into?

Are there websites for condo/home rentals that might be pet friendly?

We are looking for a luxury type place.

Thanks so much!

Traveling with 2 Small Dogs

It is difficult to rent a place for a weekend at the beach. Luxury or otherwise.

The problem is twofold. one the danger of the pet being infected with heartworm. In your case because you live in the south, I%26#39;m sure you provide proper medication for your pet.

the other problem is Sand Fleas. Taking a pet onto the beach provides those nasty little critters the opportunity to hop on. They then alight in carpet or upholstery and cause other renters all sorts of grief. I would suggest that you make arrangements to give your pets some R and R also. there is a pet hotel on the island called Evergreen. Drop them off there and enjoy your stay.

PS I%26#39;m an owner of a dog and several cats. We do not take them to our rental property except during the winter season.

I agree with Stan- people just don%26#39;t want pets in their rentals - and if they do allow them- good luck - I wouldn%26#39;t stay there!

Wow - I have to disagree - about the dogs at least. We also bring two small dogs on all our trips and have never had trouble with the owners or with fleas. We use vrbo.com and only choose ones with the ';paw print'; that accepts pets. We are always very upfront and even send photos of our dogs to the owners. We%26#39;ve gotten our deposit back the 3 times we had to put one down and the other times we had to pay a flat pet fee. Just be upfront, honest and most of all, pick up after the dogs and leave the place clean. Our dogs have regular heartworm treatment and flea treatment too and we%26#39;ve never had a problem with either. HOWEVER, we don%26#39;t really take the dogs on the beach but once or twice a trip. They%26#39;re chihuahuas - not really water dogs!

Now, as far as a long weekend rental - that is harder to do because most owners liek to rent a full week. Some owners will consider last minute weekends or off-season weekends.

We are renting a luxury home in Palmetto Dunes this week - email me next week and I%26#39;ll let you know how we liked it.

I might be a little prejudiced because I am so highly allergic to pets. I personally will NEVER rent a place tht allows pets.

slandsl: I have to agree with travelluvr for the most part. If were renting a house or condo and it said ';pet friendly'; or ';pets welcome';, it would definitely not be my first choice. I would shy away from a place like that. On the other hand, we love to stay at the Hilton Oceanfront and I was flabbergasted that they are a pet friendly hotel. All the times we have stayed there, I have not seen one animal (of the domestic kind). The hotel is very clean and I have never smelled an animal. Hopefully they reserve rooms just for pet owner use but if not, they do a great job of cleaning, but the thought of having fleas in the carpet is very disconcerting to me.

I know I sound like an animal hater, but we are not. We, as of last summer, had a fantastic black lab who we loved very much but we would never consider travelling with him, let alone having him in a hotel room with us. The concept of people travelling with and bringing pets into hotels with them is quite strange to us Canadians. We put our pets in kennels and go and enjoy ourselves while they are pampered too.

If anyone has any additional recommendations for pet friendly places OR which area of Hilton head I should be looking into that would be helpful.

';Lifesabeachbum'; I%26#39;m not sure how to email you? But I%26#39;d love your feedback when you return.

It is not helpful to receive advice on whether or not to travel with our dogs.

slandsl:

Gotcha. Anyway, here%26#39;s a list of pet friendly hotels on/near Hilton Head:

http://reservations.pet-friendly-hotels.net \(the link was too long so just google what I have below. There were 11 places.

Hopefully this link will work. If not, just google pet friendly hotels hilton head. It will give you a list of all pet friendly hotels on the island or near Hilton Head. If you find one you like, then ask us what we think of it and where it is. You will probably not find a condo/home for rent for a long weekend, especially a ';luxury type place.'; You may also want to try vrbo.com and look for the ';paws'; which denote pet friendly places. Some of those may rent for a long weekend.

hope this helps,

Thanks Luckytimer that is helpful.

We%26#39;ve decided we will go for a week. My husband will just bring work with him and at least he will have an ocean as scenery rather than his office walls.

And no..we would not all share a hotel room. That would be pretty crazy.

BTW for anyone interested our dogs are Coton De Tulear. cotondog.com non-shedding hypo allergenic dogs.

slandsl: I will send you a private message. I have a link for you that lists a whole bunch of pet-friendly rentals.

FYI- No such thing as Hypo-allergenic dogs. All dogs produce dander and that is what causes the allergic reation in most people.

Enjoy your time on HHI- you will love it!:)
