Culture Hound re where to buy fresh seafood

We are staying at Wild Dunes on IOP. Please advise where to go to buy shrimp fresh from the boats or seafood market? Also are you familiar with Reds Ice House for dinner. and in Charleston, the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co? They were recommended as dogs are allowed. We are travelling with a small bichon.

Do you know if dogs on a leash are allowed at Drayton Hall and Middleton Place and Boone Hall?

If you carry the dog is he allowed on the Carriage ride if so which company? Thanks for your help.

The boats come and go at Shem Creek. The best time to go is 2ish and you can buy right off the boat. Mt. Pleasant Seafood is a good place as well (also at Shem Creek). Don%26#39;t know about the dog thing.

I was a little surprised to see Bubba%26#39;s come up as dog friendly so I did a quick net search.

Here%26#39;s a great site:

It appears Bubba Gump%26#39;s does allow dogs if you eat outside. As with all restaurants in the Charleston and beach area, I recommend calling to verify.

Our Great Escape. Thanks for that website.

I now know that Boone Hall allows dogs and the Palmetto Carriage Works allows dogs.

Dogs are not allowed at Middleton Place nor at Drayton Hall. There is a doggy day care on the way that could take care of your little one while you enjoyed the plantations.

Sorry - I%26#39;ve been out of town for 2 weeks and have just returned. I%26#39;ll have many trip reports to write so I%26#39;ll get right to the point here:

Red%26#39;s is GREAT for taking your pooch and enjoying a brew, but their food needs a little ';intervention'; IMHO. If it%26#39;s oyster season it%26#39;s sure fun to get a bucket of them and an oyster knife and glove and enjoy the place, but if you%26#39;re looking for something fancier there are many other choices.

Bubba Gump%26#39;s is a chain located in many American cities. I have to admit their food isn%26#39;t bad but it%26#39;s not local or that imaginative.

I%26#39;ve seen pups at Poe%26#39;s Tavern on Sullivan%26#39;s Island (accompanied by outdoor diners). I%26#39;d say that most places that are casual that also have outdoor dining would allow well-behaved pets.

There is a new adorable pet shop in Mt. Pleasant%26#39;s Towne Center called ';Hairy Winston'; - pets are VERY welcome there. There is a restaurant in Mt. P called ';Dog and Duck'; that allows dogs all the time.

I assume you know that you can take your pet (as long as you ';scoop';) to the beach at Isle Of Palms. Sullivan%26#39;s Island requires a dog license so it%26#39;s probably not worth the effort since IOP is so close. Just read the signs re: when dogs ok on the beach.

If I think of other places, I%26#39;ll write back. The suggestion of the dog-friendly website is good - that should be very informative.

Enjoy!

Simmons on IOP has fresh seafood, and it%26#39;s on the way back from town to Wild Dunes.

Dunleavy%26#39;s has outdoor seating and people bring their dogs there too.

Sorry - I lost focus on your question. You%26#39;re looking for fresh shrimp from the boats - here%26#39;s how to do it.

Go to Shrimp Boat Lane (easy to remember!) which, if you%26#39;re coming from Charleston, cross over Shem Creek and take the 1st right, next left, next right, and you%26#39;re almost there. (there is another way to go but even though there are fewer turns it is more dangerous to people who don%26#39;t know the area - trust me). You will be on a very residential-looking street that is overgrown with oaks that makes a sharp turn to the right and then you have to make a left and will shortly see the signs for Wando Shrimp (our favorite). With every purchase you get a free cat so come prepared. (Of course, cat is optional)

From the Shem Creek ';bridge'; (don%26#39;t expect to notice you%26#39;re on one) it%26#39;s about 90 seconds though this sounded tougher.

I was there last night. The cats are ready to meet you.

If you go there on Tues through Sat evenings you can go next door to the Wreck for dinner.
