Off the beaten path ideas Pawleys Island?

We will be traveling to Waccamaw River Shore for the ';Outstanding in the Field'; dinner experience (chef is Louis Osteen of Louis%26#39; at Pawleys).

We would like some ideas for off the beaten path things to do/see while in the area, or on the way back towards Augusta. We obviously enjoy fine food, but also like beaches, hiking, visiting cultural sites and quirky off the beaten path things. So...would appreciate suggestions.

Off the beaten path ideas Pawleys Island?

Well, Pawleys is very much a tourist area, so ';off the beaten path'; is very much relative. Regardless, a few suggestions....

Brookgreen Gardens - www.brookgreen.org - is exceptional and well worth a visit.

Huntington Beach State Park has the best beaches in the area, and is also home to Atalaya, the Huntington%26#39;s castle-like home (see Brookgreens%26#39; website).

Hobcaw Barony - www.hobcawbarony.org - was the winter home of Bernard Baruch and is now a research facility for marine biology and coastal environments. If your timing is right, they offer some very interesting tours.

Lowcountry Plantation Tours - www.lowcountrytours.com - offer boat tours of area waterways captained by a very knowledge and entertaining local character, leaving from Georgetown.

If you enjoy the outdoors, Black River outfitters - www.blackriveroutdoors.com - have some excellent guided kayak trips. The lowcountry rivers and marshes are perfect for beginners, and it%26#39;s a beautiful way to enjoy this area%26#39;s scenery and wildlife.

Off the beaten path ideas Pawleys Island?

Thanks for the reply. I%26#39;ve been to Brookgreen Gardens as a child and wonder what there%26#39;d be to see in late September? The Hobcaw Barony sounds interesting as well as the boat tours or kayaking trip. The water exploration seems appealing in September as I hope the insects %26amp; heat will have abated.

I have to agree with some of the places the above poster mentioned. I do however think you will find Pawleys to be MUCH less ';tourist like'; than most places on the coast.

It is nothing like Myrtle Beach. Sure, we have many people vacationing here and we have a few hotels and Inns, but you will not find a Putt Putt or a strip club on every corner here. In fact, we have none of that here.

It is a beautiful, wonderful place to live and visit. You will find great places to dine and beautiful things to see. You will love Louis%26#39; but you may also want to travel 10 min. south to Georgetown for a few of the resturants on the waterfront. You may want to check out the historical section of Georgwtown and visit the attractions there as well. There is a lot of history.

Enjoy!
