Need help from the local experts

We are planning a trip in October to Charleston. We will be getting a boat from Freedom Boat Club 24 Patriots Point Road and we are looking for a hotel in the area and also restaurants with great food. It doesn%26#39;t have to be fancy restaurants we like to eat where the locals eat. Is this area close to the downtown area?

Check out this web site; http://www.sciway.net/hotels/mt-pleasant.html

I have a condo in Wild Dunes so I don%26#39;t know much about hotels. It%26#39;s hard to find a bad restaurant in the Charleston area. Downtown I like Slightly North of Broad, High Cotton, Blossom, and Magnolias in that order. On IOP/Sullivan%26#39;s Station 22 and the Boathouse are good. Poe%26#39;s on Sullivans is a mush for lunch. Great hamburger. The Sea Biscuit on IOP is great for breakfast. There are a number of very acceptable restaurants on Shem Creek. The Old Village Post House in Mt. Pleasant is also excellent.

Shem Creek is about 10 minutes from downtown in traffic. Charleston is a small city without the transportation problems of lots of cities. That%26#39;s a double-edged sword - because of that, we really don%26#39;t have a top notch bus transportation system, and passenger trains are not even a glint in the eye (though they have proposed a monorail or something from Summerville, which does have traffic issues into town)

Locals like: Boulevard Diner (very bare-bones but great food at great prices); Mustard Seed (great food at a good value); Locklear%26#39;s (across from Boulevard Diner - near Shem Creek). i could go on and on but you might not be able to have all that much time! Seewee Restaurant in Awendaw is also a good local place.

sounds to me like you need to check out the offerngs at shem creek. i do not knwo if they will let you dock there and come in to eat or not though.

Yes, they definitely do. You will need to (what is the boat term for ';double park';?) ';tie up'; or whatever near Red%26#39;s - that%26#39;s the only place that there are boats small enough to walk across to get to the dock. (the other boats in the creek are pretty huge)

We have docked the boat to eat at Shem Creek Bar and Grill, they have a bar out on their dock which is nice. Your boat cannot be too big for that restaurant though, you have to be small enough to go under the Shem Creek bridge.

We have also had luck tying up across from Red%26#39;s and going to Water%26#39;s Edge or Vickery%26#39;s. There are more large boats on that side, so you have to get lucky to find a spot but it is doable.

Also, you can dock at the Harbor Hilton and go inside and eat at their restaurant/bar. Can%26#39;t remember what its called, its expensive and only okay food from what I remember.
