Hi-
I am traveling with 4 couples to Kiawah Island the 2nd week of October. We were going to make some trips to Charleston and wanted some ideas on ';must do%26#39;s or must eat at%26#39;s%26#39;'; while visiting Charleston. We will be staying for 7 days. So, local experts if you had to tell someone 5 things they must do to experience the best of Charleston what would you recommend? I am planning this on short notice. Thank you in advance for your help. :)
Need advise on what to do - 2nd week of October
First of all - welcome to Charleston - and lucky you! It%26#39;s a great time to be here due to our annual events (one of the top ones being held by www.preservationsociety.org). So that%26#39;s a start - look online for what interests you and unless you%26#39;re here on a weekend, you should be fine with picking up the tickets when you get to town. (But if you%26#39;d be disappointed to miss the chance, you can order online).
Of course other things to do...carriage ride...Ft. Sumter tour...walking historic tour or Civil War tour...perhaps a ghost or graveyard tour...trips to the plantations...Patriot%26#39;s Point and the Yorktown and Congressional Medal of Honor museum...The Hunley...the beaches...shopping...Farmer%26#39;s market on Saturdays in Marion Square...and more!
Restaurants - have some shrimp and grits; go to an oyster bar; go to happy hour at Social; go to Shem Creek for buckets of oysters and buckets of beer;
Let us know what price range you want in a restaurant and if you want casual or dressy or in between. Also if you have any ';stay away from%26#39;s'; in food choices. (ie - some people are allergic to shellfish)
Enjoy!

Here are some things I have on my calendar:
1. Fall Tour of Homes--These tours are sponsored by the Preservation Society of Charleston. For ticket information, visit: www.preservationsociety.org/tour_dates.asp
2. Lowcountry Bounty Festival on Seabrook Island--Benefits the Outreach Learning Center. For more info, visit http://www.connectinghands.org/festival.htm
If you%26#39;ve ever wanted to see Seabrook Island, now%26#39;s your chance...and all for a good cause!
The Preservation Society tours are EXCELLENT. We just took one of them last Thursday evening, and it was lovely - even in the drizzling rain. The volunteers are knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides into Charleston%26#39;s culture and history. Even my husband, who is less inclined to interest in historic homes than I, looks forward to going on more of the tours. The Preservation Society tours are a rare glimpse into Charleston%26#39;s beautiful private homes and ';magical'; gardens. The evening tours are also a great way to walk off a great dinner!
