I am planning a last minute trip to Seabrook Island for this coming weekend. I%26#39;ve done my research, but I have a few questions.
1. What are the bugs like this time of year? What about jellyfish?
2. We might stay in Pelican Watch villas...what is the Edisto river water like out in front of the villas? Someone on here referred to it as ';murky'; and didn%26#39;t make it sound very nice. I know we can walk to the ocean side easily, but I%26#39;d like to know what the river is like since it%26#39;s rigth out front. I%26#39;m partial to ocean water.
3. Someone mentioned a shell cruise to an island that is only reached by boat, but didn%26#39;t give any details. Any info? What about good shelling areas right on Seabrook?
4. Where is the closest Walmart/CVS/Rite Aid/Target type shopping area? Is everything really 30 miles away? We%26#39;ll have to purchase beach ';stuff'; (ie, umbrella) since no one seems to provide this type of thing, and I don%26#39;t want to pay a fortune at a touristy shop on the island.
Any other tips? We are mostly going to relax, sightsee, and eat good local food. No need for anything fancy. Thanks!
Seabrook Island infoOur house is on Kiawah, so I can help you w/a few questions...
1. Bugs aren%26#39;t bad on the beach unless the wind blows from the wrong direction (that%26#39;s usually only when there is a hurricane out in the ocean), I%26#39;d still take spray for interior, but they don%26#39;t generally bother me (I%26#39;m one of the lucky ones, they always find my husband).
2. Have not stayed on Seabrook, but have kayaked the waters in the areas you are talking about, not noticed anything ';murky';. The waters are not like in the Caribbean, it%26#39;s just ocean/marsh/tidal river water.
3. The cruise would be to Botany Island, IMHO, I don%26#39;t think the shells there are the greatest, they are bleached more than the shells on Kiawah, but otherwise the same. The shells get tossed onto the beach at the north end of the island in the channel at the mouth of the Edisto River. The shells on these islands are old shells, which have been tossed around in Atlantic storms, they are not the pretty shells that are found in the Gulf. Depending on location you may be able to find sand dollars.
The trip we like best leaves from Cherry Point Landing (where you can also get fresh shrimp for good prices and it%26#39;s a nice drive to get there)...

Call to find out what trips they are running this time of year, we like the sunset cruise, it%26#39;s not the same as the shelling cruise. On the way out to Cherry Point is the Angel Oak, a winery and the tea plantation.
4. Target is about 23+ miles away at the Citadel Mall. The ';Big Pig'; is about 10 miles away, either of these would be best for your ';stuff';. Freshfields is right at the juncture of Kiawah/Seabrook w/specialty shops and a nice, albeit $$$ grocery store. I%26#39;d stop at Target on the way in.
Can%26#39;t tell by your questions if you%26#39;ve made reservations yet, hope you know that Seabrook is a gated community and you can%26#39;t just show up and find a place to stay.
Seabrook Island infoBugs and jellyfish shouldn%26#39;t be a problem. One of my neighbors emailed me last week that the no see %26#39;ums have not appeared.
An old golfer%26#39;s trick to keep bugs at bay--Bounce dryer sheets. Rub yourself down, then place the sheet in your pocket.
I wouldn%26#39;t concern yourself with the ';looks'; of the water of the Edisto. Do keep in mind, when the tide is in this area of the beach is limited (and you won%26#39;t be able to walk thru to the North Beach area).
Are you driving or flying? There is a Walmart and a Sam%26#39;s club located near the airport in North Charleston. West Ashley has a new Walmart (and a Publix) that I%26#39;m partial to. You do have to take a different route to get to Main Rd (I think I have the directions in a spreadsheet if you%26#39;d like).
Be sure and ask the rental company or owner you%26#39;re renting from if they provide any beach stuff. I make a lot of beach things available for my guests...and guests seem to add to my collection every year too:-)
