A Taste of the Old South

I am planning a stop in Charleston, maybe a day or two, on my way down to my winter escape in Florida. Can anyone recommend a hotel or area to stay in where I can capture a taste of the ';old south';. Maybe some restaurants, city tours, etc. Something I can do in a day or so. Thank you.

Stay in the historic district and eat at one of the restaurants near Market Street. Take one of the city and plantation tours to get a feel for the old south. I like both the Middleton and Magnolia plantation tours. The food for lunch at the Middleton is great.

Nice hotel - and depending on when you come (our high season starts in mid March and continues through early June) you might be able to get a deal at the Mills House (www.millshouse.com) It is actually associated with the Holiday Inn (so start collecting those points!) thought it is historic and beautiful and in a good location.

For one day, that%26#39;s not much. Take a carriage ride, and then select from: Harbor Cruise to Ft. Sumter, walking around the area South of Broad (try to get a guide book); take a formal walking tour with a tour guide (last 2 1/2 hours and cost about $18); enjoy a nice southern lunch at Hominy Grill or Jestine%26#39;s, go shopping on Market St, have a coctail at a rooftop bar, and enjoy a lovely dinner at Magnolia%26#39;s or 82 Queen, then listen to jazz at Mistral.
