I point these things out to remind people about the dangers of the water. The last few people who have drowned in past month or so have been adults. Article does not say anything about alcohol being involved, although time frame makes you wonder, but the tv station said they were walking with their family and the 2 of them stepped in a ';gully';. Be mindful of the power of the ocean when you visit. Watch your little ones.

Edward Presbery, 34, of Westland, Mich., died about 1:15 Saturday morning, Horry County Deputy Coroner Charles Sendler said.
Lawanda Presbery, 35, said she and her husband were both good swimmers and liked to swim at all hours.
';We were just playing in the waves at night,'; she said. ';We had a rule to never go out in parts of the ocean where our feet couldn%26#39;t touch the bottom. Our feet were touching the bottom, but the waves took over. The waves pulled us back, and we lost control. We couldn%26#39;t feel our feet at the bottom anymore.';
Another Drowning
How sad... never can be too careful.. :(
Another Drowning
that was always my rule, but i never swim after dark, so scary and sad
it was late at night but the other drownings have been during day light hours. The tv made it sound more like walking along the shoreline and they stepped in a gully, which sounds like maybe a ';swash drainage ditch';. I am not exactly sure what happened, obviously the time of night could have had something to do with it and possible alcoholic consumption.
I am sorry to hear the news about the Presbery family of Westland, Michigan. My prayers are with them.
Edward Presbery will be deeply missed by everyone that knew him.
I would like for his family to know that they are in my prayers.
Sincerly,
Freddie and Sharna Bennett
Not a drowning, but did you hear NC Coast had 2 shark bites within couple days of each other, one at Atlantic Beach and one at North Topsail Island, the 2nd one was a 14 yr old, I just read breifly about it this morning. A 10%26#39; tiger shark was caught last weekend at the Little River inlet, where the Intracoastal and Ocean connect, the largest shark caught on the east coast something like a 1000 lbs was caught off Cherry Grove Pier. Anyway, I know Gator and others will ';bash'; me again for my shark bite stories, I just pass on the news, everyone can make their own decisions.
Another prime example of why I DO NOT get into the water over my ankles. If I can%26#39;t see my toes I DON';T get in.
This is really sad. I feel for them.
A few years ago while at MB there were two small kids, ages around 6 and 9 swimming and playing at the Ocean, DW noticed the entire time we were at the beach which was hours that not one time did an adult come up to them. Being a mom she thought something wasnt right with the picture and asked me if I had seen any adults, I told her no.
Next day, same kids at the beach for hours no adults, so we watched them like any parent would and DW was lying on the beach and I was in the water, next thing we heard an awful scream, it was the 6 year old getting stung by a school of jellyfish, I was a couple hundred yards away just came up from a body surf and looked up at my wife to make sure she and DD was ok, the was poiting out at the water and said, ';the kids, the kids'; in voice I knew something was wrong.
The lifeguard never moved an inch, I ran up shore and into the water without thinking, ran into the water, grabbed both the kids, one in one arm the other over my shoulder, as I was running I notice the little one had been stung many times over her legs.
The lifeguard finally got there to put meat tendorizer on her and asked if anyone had a cell phone. The 9 year old looked at me in tears and said mister you saved our lives and big my a big hug..
I will never forget that, ever.....
Lesson, an avid beach swimmer for more then 20 years and I have been in every beach that I can think of in the US top to bottom, you really have to be careful, look at the water, the color, the waves, the flags, never swim alone, never wear jewlry into the water, always swim in crowds of people and never swim after dark, ever. A slight under toe can take you out quickly, been there and done that and was able to swim out of it.
The lesson is the ocean water must be respected by everyone at all times and please parents do me and all of us a favor, if your child is close to the ocean you NEED to be right there with them at ALL times.
As far as the kids go..... I asked the 9 year old, where is mommy and daddy? What did she say....... They are taking a nap !!!!!!!!
In the hotel room I might add. And yes, I told the security guard at the hotel that these two beautiful kids need parents, real ones, call the police.
Please enjoy the ocean, its allot of fun, but you need to learn to respect it.
It is always sad when someone passes away, but for me being a beachlover I really hate to hear this. My family will be praying for them.
I am afraid that is more common then you think. One reason I guess I harp and preach so much about the dangers of the beach and swimming also about letting your kids walk alone up and down Ocean Blvd, it takes 1 time, 1 person, and 1 second and lives can be ruined. Do not think because you are on vacation you are no longer a parent and no longer responsible for your children. (Oh so many do though). And don%26#39;t think criminals take a vacation either, when you are on vacation they are working! We have crime, we are #1 in SC for car thefts/break-ins. Don%26#39;t leave your packages, suitcases, purses in the car in full view, nothing of value, it will be gone.
I agree with all of these posts. I was in MB last year when someone drowned at night.
Please don%26#39;t swim at night--ever.
Watch your kids---always--I never am more than 15 feet away from my 8 year old in the water. My 16 year old goes out a little ways but stays in a group and alays with a lifeguard--we always are with our kids on the beach--even the 16 year old. We never let them go to the beach alone--this goes for the pool too. Especially, the hotel pools without a lifeguard.
Don%26#39;t entrust the older kids to ';watch'; the younger ones at the pool. They can look away once--and it%26#39;s too late.
Heed all beach warnings. I found out the hard way in Florida. I got pulled under in a wave and I could not get out. The waves ended up being over my head and I panicked.
My doctor drowned in a rip current. He had two kids. He was an excellent swimmer. Believing too high in your ability to swim can kill you.
Please be careful and have a wonderful beach vacation
