My husband and I are coming to Charleston Nov 15-17 for a sightseeing trip. I thought that we would probably want to stay in the historic district, but I am finding that area to be a bit expensive. Is it worth the premium to stay in that location, or would you recommend elsewhere? We will have a car to use and we generally like to stay in ';nicer'; places. That said, we don%26#39;t really spend much time at the hotel and have had pleasant experiences at places such as Hamptons, etc. Any help on hotels/locations be great!

Try the Hampton Inn in Mt. Pleasant. It is a 5-10 minute drive to downtown.

It really and truly is worth the price difference to stay in the historic district. To me, part of the magic of Charleston is being able to get out and explore on foot in the early morning and in the evening, especially since you will be there for such a short time. You might try the Andrew Pinckney Inn. I checked your dates and they have rooms available for $159 during that time. If you must stay outside of the historic district, I would try to stay in Mt. Pleasant, maybe in the Shem Creek area.
I agree with KYBetsy - if you can, stay downtown. If you like Hotwire, you might get a deal at one of the 3 to 4 star hotels during your stay. A nice option in Mt. Pleasant is the Shem Creek Inn - otherwise, you might be in a nice place but it%26#39;s ';just a hotel room';.
